Concept name*
Kasi Math: Multi-sensory learning for fractions
Location
Bloomfield, MI
Application Track
Mathematical Literacy to Promote a Future STEM Workforce
Description
Alchemie’s Kasi multi-sensory learning system provides students with a tactile alternative to a mouse or a touch screen for digital interactives. This system can be used by all students but is especially important for students who are blind or have low vision (BLV). This novel approach to digital user interaction is accomplished through a non-proprietary webcam and on computer equipment already owned by schools. The Kasi computer vision (CV) algorithms read the positions of the plastic, braille- or texture-labeled pieces, maps the CV data as input to a web-based interactive, and then provides audio-guided instruction. The Kasi system brings an independent and inclusive method for BLV students to learn in today’s classrooms and communicate with their sighted peers and instructors. This Vital Prize Challenge project would be to build the Kasi system for the pivotal concepts for fractions and proportional reasoning which are taught in grades 4-8.
