Concept name*
Tyto Online: Learn and apply math to real-life problems that matter, using an engaging 3D video game
Location
Buffalo, NY
Application Track
Mathematical Literacy to Promote a Future STEM Workforce
Description
The proposed concept will build off our success with science with Tyto Online, bringing math to our problem-based game-based learning platform. Tyto Online is currently used for science by setting up meaningful, problem-based learning in a video game. For example, a Councilwoman asks students to solve a food shortage by working with a farmer to increase crop yield as they learn genetics. We see a 12% increase in science and engineering skills and 50% of students with an increase in STEM engagement. Now, we’re expanding to math with a similar approach: meaningful, problem-based learning that empowers diverse learners with math. They can help solve problems on urban heat island with statistics, or learn about coordinate grids by planning a community park. Students experience the “why” behind math, set in a meaningful context, and with an open, visual, inquiry-based approach that research shows can powerfully improve math understanding.
